Description

Rhizome ascending to erect, densely covered with long chestnut hairs. Fronds tufted, up to 2m long, firmly herbaceous or herbaceous. Stipe 33-35 cm long, strong at the base, abruptly decreasing, relatively thin, straight, grooved above, (strawcoloured?), glabrous. Lamina bipinnate to tripinnate; ovate in outline, twice as long as the stipe, dark green when dry, concolorous, with 12-15 pair of pinnae; pinnae lanceolate or ovate in outline, average 23-40 cm long, almost uniformly divided from base to tip, pinnate, (only in the uppermost 4-5 gradually divided and lobed?), the apical part is broadly triangular, short, from the base pinnatopartite abruptly lobed then subcomplete; pinnules 8-15 pair, petiolulate or shortly adnate towards the pinnae apex, remote, open, narrowly triangular or triangular-lanceolate in outline, inequilateral, wider in the basal half, the base pinnatifid or lobed, then gradually less incised, finally ending in a pointed-caudal subintact apical part, middle pinnules 4.5-8 x 1.5-2.3 cm, apical pinnules smaller (2-3 cm long) triangular and slightly lobed; rhachis wingless, relatively thin, 3-4 mm in diameter, honey or straw-green, subglabrous but close to and densely hairy above the insertion of the pinnae; costae and costules grooved above, greenish-strawcoloured, sparsely hairy and with yellowish-brown long needle-shaped articular hairs in the groove; veins and venules evident on both sides, sparsely hairy, reticulate. Sori shape and size very variable, marginal, the larger ones placed in the sinus of the lobes, the smaller ones, otherwise irregularly scattered along the margin; indusium small yellow papery; sporangia interspersed with filiform flexuous paraphyses. (translated from Latin, needs to be checked with specimens!)

Notes

Differs from B. glabra by having a wingless rhachis, all pinnae pinnate, pinnules petiolulate, presence of long acicular arched yellowish-brown hairs on the upper side of rhachis, veinlets prominent on both sides, also presence of small sori irregularly scattered along the edges.
