Description of the family

Terrestrial or lithophytic ferns. Rhizome scandent or wide-creeping, laterally branched. Stipe articulated. Fronds monomorphic, numerous, widely spaced, simple, deciduous, venation free. Sori circular, in a single row on either side of the midrib near costae; indusium kidney-shaped, opening outwards, homosporous.

Comment: The genus Arthropteris has recently been put within the family of the Tectariaceae.

Worldwide: 1 genus and c. 40 species worldwide.
